Oh Hi...

So there I was, quietly working away on the computer, and then I hear this loud meow from over my shoulder…

It’s our beloved Sophie, sat in the sink in the bathroom, demanding a drink of water.

You can see the rest of the pictures in our picture gallery, suffice to say that once she’s got my attention, this is a well practised routine.

She always used to demand water in the bath, so first off she will go and sit in the bath and stare at the taps, then once I’ve seen that, she’ll hop up and stand back in the sink again, until I can move her enough to get the plug into the plughole and run some water. Having said that, half the time the disruption of having had to move her out the way to run the water means she goes off in a huff…

Luther's Legs Fail Him (Again)

A sad little bit of news today from my parents. This morning they had to have Luther, one of their two Red Burmese cats put down. Considering that back in 1992, Luther who was the runt of the litter wasn’t expected to survive into adulthood, and indeed never grew to full size, he’s had a good long life at fifteen years.

He’s been going steadily downhill for the past few months, and has been suffering with his teeth to the point that he hasn’t been eating much, and only usually when someone is there to feed him, so Mum and Dad have ended up hand feeding him four times a day for the past few months. Eventually yesterday he was barely moving and rather than see his quality of life deteriorate any more they took the decision to take him along to the vets this morning and have him put to sleep.

The picture on this page shows how Luther usually greeted visitors to the house, by flopping over and expecting attention, he also liked sitting on your left shoulder – and note, only the left shoulder – being on the right would generally produce a lot of fidgeting to get over onto the correct side! Like most Burmese he was very sociable, and also could be very vocal at times. He also in younger times would quite happily play fetch and retrieve games – something again that Burmese are known for doing.

Apparently after faking the results of one competition, it has been revealed that producers of Blue Peter have again deceived the public with a story that their new cat, Socks, wasn’t the name that was selected in an online poll.

Having said that, dig into the story a little bit, and you’ll actually find it was because the poll selected an unsuitable name. Amusingly few of the articles have actually said what the unsuitable name actually is. Expecting something shocking, I came across this Times article which drops the following hint:

Socks was the name chosen for the Blue Peter cat by the programme’s producers, although insiders said that the decision was taken because the most common name selected – a variant on Puss – was deemed to be inappropriate.

The Sun has no problem revealing the name.

Having found out what the name actually is, I do think that you’ll find that there were a good few non-viewers who voted for that for a laugh. As to it being inappropriate, and the fact that neither the BBC online service or the broadsheets are reporting the actual name, it is ironic to consider that thirty years ago prime-time BBC comedy series Are You Being Served used the same name as the basis for a running gag… How times have changed!

Update: The BBC have now released a statement claiming that the name that won the poll that wasn’t used was Cookie – quite why producers changed the vote and went for Socks instead I don’t know. The Times is still quoting the original story attributing it to BBC staff – but also quoting that the corporation is officially saying ‘Cookie’. Digital Spy is saying that it is because Socks was considered a more suitable name for a kitten. On what basis is Cookie considered inappropriate for a children’s programme or less suitable for a kitten than Socks? Certainly I’ve known several people who have used one or other of the names for pets before and not had any concerns about the names being inappropriate for their children. Very strange…

I snapped off this picture of Ebony, the cat from two doors down as I got home this evening. Beth confirmed that she’d been curled up like this outside our house an hour before too. Having said that, we’re not quite sure why she finds this particular spot so attractive, as there aren’t any warm pipes or anything like that which we are aware of. Being Watched

Coming in and out of our house at night, we’ve been getting the strangest feeling that we’re being watched. There have also been strange scuffling noises close to the door too.

At first I thought that maybe our previous nocturnal visitor had returned, but no, a deft bit of surprise camera work with the mobile phone, and we get some evidence. True it’s much like the blurry indistinct evidence you often get when someone claims to have seen something strange, but anyway, we have our culprit.

It seems that Ebony, the jet black cat who lives two doors down has decided that sitting between the front doors of our house and next door is the ideal spot to hide out in the dark, especially as her colour makes her really difficult to spot in the dark!

Sophie on the Sofa

So this week we finally got a diagnosis for what is wrong with Sophie, our cat – and the diagnosis also could explain some of the other bits of her behaviour too.

The reason we had taken her along to the vets was because for the third time in the last year or so she had again had a session of repeatedly vomiting for no apparent reason. Now like most cats she has vomiting sessions, usually after eating grass, or having eaten her food too quickly, but these have been a little different. Usually she hasn’t been outside, or eaten anything recently, she just starts vomiting, does so several times over an hour or so, and then is absolutely fine. However when the vet takes a look at her, the only symptom is a slightly elevated temperature. Alongside that she has also been drinking a lot of water (and she will only drink from the sink in the bathroom), and has been loosing weight, despite eating her normal levels of wet food. Anyway, after the most recent visit, the vet suggested doing some blood tests, and now we actually have a diagnosis.

Sophie is suffering from Feline Hyperthyroidism, which explains the weight loss, the vomiting and the thirst. Hyperactivity is also a symptom, which maybe explains some of the dashing around the house and howling that we’ve previously put down to her quirky personality.

Currently she is on a selection of pills to stabalise her thyroid gland, before a decision on treatment is made in a couple of weeks. The choices are much the same as the human equivalent, either radiotherapy, or surgery to remove the thyroid. Radiotherapy will involve Sophie spending three weeks at a specialist in London, whilst the surgery can be performed locally, so currently, assuming she checks out in a couple of weeks, it may be the surgery.

Having said that, we’re really rather gald that we took out pet insurance on Sophie, as the bill for even getting to the diagnosis stage is the best part of £1000!

Sophie 1

Reading Wil Shipley’s blog today it seems that his cats have been taking lessons from Sophie over making a fuss.

This morning, the word on the street (where the street is actually the foot of my bed) was that, sometime late last night, the cat food bowl ran almost empty.

This news was imparted to me with such urgency that I assumed it must have been meant for a much wider distribution, as if my fuzzy friends had used their super-keen senses to detect an imminent earthquake or another global-warming-induced hurricane.

It is well-known, of course, that cats can die to death from not eating for six hours. Or, in this case, from having to eat the kibble bits left on the bottom of the bowl, which is clearly less desirable, else why would it be left over? It was the kibble found wanting, and to have to eat it would be tantamount to death, at least.

We’re having a similar problem with Sophie at the moment. Like a lot of pets she is very much a creature of habit, and will start to get quite vocal if she doesn’t get fed at her usual times, don’t do things the way we usually do (for example when we go on holiday). On a usual day she expects food at about 6am, goes off and goes to sleep when we would usually leave for work, is sat on the stairs or behind the door when we get home, and in the evening it is demanding food for around 10pm.

However, this past week we have had the annual problem caused by the clock change, which of course she doesn’t cope with at all, so she’s decided that if we haven’t got up and fed her at 5am that we should be and she starts complaining. In the evening from about 7:30pm now she is trying to trip you up if you go anywhere near the kitchen, I assume on the basis that since we forgot to feed her until an hour later the night before, we need to be reminded early. In general we’re getting a lot of complaining because we’ve changed our schedule.

Matters are made somewhat worse by the fact that we’ve recently been shutting her out of our room at night, since she took to sleeping either on top of Beth, or wedged in on the end of her pillow, rather than on the end of the bed where Sophie had slept before – so we get pretty vocal complaining about that too. Remind me again, why is it that we have a pet?
