Sick Cat Update

Last night I blogged about Sophie’s current bout of sickness. After the last update, she was sick twice more, and it got to the point that we phoned the emergency vet, who advised us that there was nothing really he could do, aside from what we were doing, aside from suggesting that we try to force her to drink using a syringe to ensure that she didn’t dehydrate.

We gave her some water, and Beth sat up with her for bit, until she seemed to have settled down. During the rest of the night, and all of today she hasn’t been sick, and even had something to eat, although about five minutes ago that came to an end as she was sick on the kitchen floor.

Anyway, late this afternoon the vet phoned with an explanation of her illness. The results of the repeat thyroid tests they had carried out had come back, and shown that rather than increased levels, she now had below normal levels – so the drug treatment had worked better than expected. She told us to immediately cut the dosage we were giving her, which will hopefully bring her levels back under control. Although as with bringing her levels down – it’s going to take a little bit of time before they get back on track – so we have a few more days yet of dashing to the kitchen with the cat every time she seems like she’s about to vomit.

Blog Card

As I mentioned in a previous post in preparation for the Robert Scoble Geek Dinner this saturday we ordered a set of Hugh McLeods Blog Cards. The cards give basic details of our blog on one side, and a cartoon on the other.

The cards arrived in the post today, and very nice they are too. The picture shows both sides of the card, propped up against the tough little plastic box they arrived in, not surprisingly quite suitable for keeping the cards safe before giving them out!

Cold Snap

Frozen Webs

The confused seasons have continued in the UK. After the mild autumn with the average temperature 4 degrees above normal for the last week we have gone to the other extreme, with a cold snap leading to surging gas prices.

We’ve had heavy frost every morning for the last week, with the external temperature reading on the car settling to a steady -5 centigrade on Friday morning. This morning was no exception, with the temperature still reading below zero when we went up to Church at about 10:30am.

By the time we got out, the fog was slowly starting to lift, but I took the opportunity to take some pictures using my camera phone. On this page is a shot of some of the spiders webs on a footpath sign. Other shots including a couple of atmospheric shots of the church can be found in our photo gallery.

That Looks Like Our Street…

The news this week included the release of a report by The Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment giving scores to 93 new housing developments in the north, and finding that only 6% of them scored as ‘Good’.

It is worth mentioning that last year they said much the same about housing developments in the South-East.

However, watching the pictures on the TV, of the estate rated worst in the entire survey, it really did look much like our street in Berkshire, which I guess is the point that CABE are trying to make.

Sophie on the Sofa

So this week we finally got a diagnosis for what is wrong with Sophie, our cat – and the diagnosis also could explain some of the other bits of her behaviour too.

The reason we had taken her along to the vets was because for the third time in the last year or so she had again had a session of repeatedly vomiting for no apparent reason. Now like most cats she has vomiting sessions, usually after eating grass, or having eaten her food too quickly, but these have been a little different. Usually she hasn’t been outside, or eaten anything recently, she just starts vomiting, does so several times over an hour or so, and then is absolutely fine. However when the vet takes a look at her, the only symptom is a slightly elevated temperature. Alongside that she has also been drinking a lot of water (and she will only drink from the sink in the bathroom), and has been loosing weight, despite eating her normal levels of wet food. Anyway, after the most recent visit, the vet suggested doing some blood tests, and now we actually have a diagnosis.

Sophie is suffering from Feline Hyperthyroidism, which explains the weight loss, the vomiting and the thirst. Hyperactivity is also a symptom, which maybe explains some of the dashing around the house and howling that we’ve previously put down to her quirky personality.

Currently she is on a selection of pills to stabalise her thyroid gland, before a decision on treatment is made in a couple of weeks. The choices are much the same as the human equivalent, either radiotherapy, or surgery to remove the thyroid. Radiotherapy will involve Sophie spending three weeks at a specialist in London, whilst the surgery can be performed locally, so currently, assuming she checks out in a couple of weeks, it may be the surgery.

Having said that, we’re really rather gald that we took out pet insurance on Sophie, as the bill for even getting to the diagnosis stage is the best part of £1000!
