I’ve blogged before about the grand farce going on down in Portsmouth, otherwise known as the Spinnaker Tower. Originally intended to open for the milenium five years ago, today after massive delays and having blown the original budget, the tower received it’s grand opening.
However the grand opening didn’t quite go according to plan, as the previously problematic glass lift struck again. This time it got stuck 30m up trapping the council project manager!
Needless to say the project manager is rather embarassed, and apologetic at the whole thing. Having said that, I’ll certainly be paying the tower a visit myself some time soon, not least to see whether all the money was worth it!
On Wednesday night we had a dinner, generously paid for by the company, to mark the completion of our current project on time.
The irony was that the dinner was held in a restaurant next to one of the most high profile late projects in the country!
This is a shot from outside the restaurant looking up at the Spinnaker Tower. Originally called the Millenium Tower, and not yet finished, you can see quite how late the project has become. It has also gone over budget, with local council tax payers having to foot the bill.
Having said that, it is now the tallest structure in the South, beating the spire at Salisbury Cathedral. Once it eventually opens, the views of the solent from the top will certainly be worth it.
