Clueless

Sometimes I despair of how clueless politicians can be when it comes to technology. This morning we had a great pronouncement that the government will protect children by requiring sex offenders to give them their e-mail address. Quite apart from the fact that many of the companies are based outside UK jurisdiction, how difficult is it to get another e-mail address? Anybody can get one or more addresses from Hotmail, Yahoo Mail or countless others – which again are beyond UK jurisdiction. All it is is another announcement that technically just cannot work, or make any difference at all. Clueless, absolutely clueless.

Is Europe a Country?

TechCrunch UK posted this clip alongside an article talking about Apple’s announcement that they are going to try and standardise the cost of downloads across Europe by getting the record companies to standardise their charges. Possibly a little optimistic – but then they did manage to have the clout to get their own way with the phone networks…

Anyway, the clip is worth posting just for the entertainment value…

A Modern Birth Announcement

A few years ago, a birth announcement would come via phone calls, or even a letter – not any more. We’ve just found out that Beth’s cousin has given birth via her uncle Hugh’s Facebook status which now reads “is the proud new Grandfather of Abigail Ware!â€? – and we knew she was on the way when her aunt Helen’s status changed earlier in the day. Congratulations from both of us too!
